Is there an important relationship in your life where you experience arguments or fights more often than you’d like, or where you just don’t get to experience a satisfying level of connection? Every relationship can benefit from bringing greater skill and awareness to how you communicate, but often when we most need to bring our best communication into action we get swept up in fighting, shutting down, or walking away in a state of exhaustion, despair, or anger. It can all happen so quickly that later you’re not quite sure how it happened, but you know that, maybe “once again,” you wish it had gone differently. However you’re communicating – in-person, text, phone, Messenger, email, Slack etc. – learning how to employ effective communication, when you most need it, makes all the difference.
At the Communication Dojo we provide communication and conflict resolution skills training based on Connected Communication aka Nonviolent Communication (NVC). During this Communication Dojo Unleashed daylong playshop we’ll be getting you up out of your seat to make use of movement, play and spontaneous interaction in your learning and practice.

Involving your body in this way accelerates the sense of “getting Connected Communication in your bones.” The aim is that you’ll develop greater awareness of what happens inside you when you communicate, and how that affects what you say and how you listen. With that awareness comes the ability to steer yourself in the direction of your deepest values and motivations, even when the temptation grows to veer in a less useful direction.
We all know that in moments of anger, upset, sadness, fear or frustration there’s a much increased chance of us falling back on “pointy” communication – the kind of communication that leads to disconnection and conflict – communication that takes your time and energy but does not give much in return.
Your body probably tries to give you instant feedback when this happens – even before you get to the bigger signals like hot face, tight stomach, tensed muscles, increased speed and loudness of speech. Defensiveness, counter-attack, shut down and running away are common choices. But what if you start listening more quickly and attentively to what your body is saying – including its signals and its movements. Come along and find out!
